Ken Griffey Jr: David Ortiz belongs in Hall of Fame

Ken Griffey Jr. believes Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz should definitely be in the Hall of Fame after his retirement.

Griffey will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday, along with Mike Piazza.

But on Saturday, he spoke out in support of Ortiz, who was signed by the Seattle Mariners as a free agent in 1992.

"Do I think he's a Hall of Famer? Absolutely," Griffey said, via MLB.com.

"The numbers that he's put up, three titles, the list goes on of the accomplishments that he's done on the field. You can't take that away from him."

Griffey never played on the same team as Ortiz, who made his MLB debut in 1997 with the Minnesota Twins before moving to Boston in 2003.

But Griffey does remember the player now affectionately known as 'Big Papi' was not so big as a young talent at the Mariners.

"David was a Mariner, drafted by the Mariners, so I got a chance to see him young," Griffey said.

"He wasn't Big Papi, he was Thin Papi at that time. So to watch him do the things that he's done over the years, he's become one of the most feared hitters in all of baseball.

"He's done an incredible job in that city."
