Rickie Fowler pleased with form ahead of Ryder Cup

Rickie Fowler was ecstatic to become one of Davis Love III's four captain's picks for the Ryder Cup, and he is feeling good about his game.

Fowler, the world number nine, had poor results at the Deutsche Bank and BMW Championships, having been tied for seventh at The Barclays.

"I'm feeling better about the game having two weeks off than I would have if I would have been playing," Fowler said in his news conference at Hazeltine National Golf Club.

"I would have been worn out. Up until the Tour Championship, I was on the road eight out of nine weeks with a couple of majors, being down in Rio and then adding Greensboro.

"I was able to relax, rest, recover and then use the week of the Tour Championship to go practice and get ready for this week."

Fowler, who was part of the United States task force, is proud to have been asked to be in on the decision-making aspect of putting the team together.

"Yeah, it was special to be asked to be a part of it," he said.

"I feel like they brought me in to have a little bit of a younger generation influence, to, in a way, be a middleman. If there was information from some of the younger guys, I would relay information back and forth. It was a lot of fun to be in the room and see the excitement of the other guys.

"Sometimes I would just kind of sit back and take in info and put my two cents in here and there, but I think Phil [Mickelson] and Tiger [Woods] took care of a lot of the talking."

Unfortunately, whenever a team is assembled, someone always gets left out.

This time, it was world number seven Bubba Watson.

However, Fowler made sure everyone knew just how much Watson still wanted to be a part of the team.

"He had mentioned to Davis before the selections or anything, that 'whether you pick me or not, I want to be there,'" Fowler said.

"It was really cool of him to make that decision to fly up here and be a part of the team this week, you know, after not getting picked.

"I think it shows a lot about who Bubba is. People may not always see that side of him. Bubba's one of my best friends. We've spent a lot of time together. I've always seen that side of him, but hopefully this shows some people that that's part of who he is."

Fowler played his practice round with Jimmy Walker, Ryan Moore and Phil Mickelson, who will likely partner with Fowler at least part of the time during team play.

The two have played multiple practice rounds together throughout the years and are friends off the course.

Though both players are a bit mercurial with their form and playing style, having the perfect combination of experience and youth exuberance could be a perfect fit.
