3 points as Black Stars fail to glitter

The Black Stars of Ghana drew their opening World Cup qualifier against a well drilled Ugandan side in Tamale.

Ghana prepared to fail from the onset

Its a strange thing to say but it is the truth.Any observer of how the national team has prepared for World Cup qualifiers in the past would have been worried by the laissez faire approach to this Uganda game.

The Black Stars faced an opponent they had not beaten in their last two outing on the back of only 3 and a half  training sessions. Players arrived late and the whole exercise had the feel of a regular international friendly rather than a crucial game.

While Uganda relocated to Lome to acclimatise and also train in relative peace, the Black Stars were engaged in public relations duties with visits to palaces. The Ghana Football Association and the ministry cannot deny responsibility for the poor preparation.

Avram Grant’s player selection template needs a makeover

The Israeli is a man of few surprises when it comes to his job but it is time for him to rethink his approach to a national team that has grown stale. The Black Stars are a predictable team.

The players are predictable and the tactics are predictable and this needs to change. How the two best players in the Ghana league;the wonderfully talented Latif Blessing of Liberty Professionals and free kick king Kwasi Donsu failed to get an observation invitation beats the imagination.

These are two players with unique skill sets and best of all had  current form to prove it. It was pretty frustrating watching Ghana waste 11 set pieces in a single game while the player who scored ten free kick goals this season watched from his sofa at home.

Yaw Yeboah is another talented player who was surprisingly considered not good enough for this team. Grant might have a winning record on his side but the continent has gotten wise to his tricks. It is time to change his menu.

Kwasi Nyantakyi and Nii Lante Vanderpiuije must be called to order

The ongoing feud between Ghana’s football association chief and the sports minister is proving a great distraction and it is time they are told so.

The two have taken pettiness to a new level that is affecting their focus on achieving results. It would be insane to deny the impact their persistent public bickering is having on the focus of the team.

Until these two get their houses in order and call a truce, the Black Stars can forget any form of success.
