LeBron James leads Cavs to maiden NBA championship

The Cleveland Cavaliers clinched their maiden NBA championship thanks to a 93-89 win over the Golden State Warriors.

LeBron James starred again in game seven of the NBA Finals with a triple-double of 27 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists at Oracle Arena on Sunday.

But the Cavs got an even contribution from Kyrie Irving (26 points), Kevin Love (nine points and 14 rebounds) and J.R. Smith (12 points) as Cleveland became the first team in history to come from 3-1 down to win the series finale.

Draymond Green was immense for the Warriors, who were aiming for back-to-back championships, with 32 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists.

Stephen Curry (17 points) and Klay Thompson (14) never reached the lofty heights expected from them.

It ended a record-breaking campaign for the Warriors in disappointing fashion after they eclipsed the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls with 73 regular-season wins.

After an even start, an 8-2 run put the Warriors ahead by seven points at half-time, but that lead quickly disappeared shortly after the interval.

The Cavs went up by seven late in the third – but that lead also evaporated in an entertaining and rollercoaster encounter

Irving hit a huge three with just under a minute remaining in the game before James made one of two free-throws to seal the win.
