Phobians win first league game against defending champions

Hearts of Oak scored a late goal to clinch their first league win against the Ghanaian champions

Hearts of Oak earned their first win in the ongoing Ghana Premier League after beating Premier League champions Wa All Stars 2-1 on match day four at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The Phobaisn scored first in the first half but Richard Arthur pulled even for the visitors, the home side however restored their lead through Thomas Abbey.

The Phobians came close as early in the third minute after Nana Adai nearly scored an own goal after he miscued Thomas Abbey’s cross for corner kick but the home side wasted the resulted kick.

Wa All Stars were pushed back – the Phobians created a lot of space at the left side of the away side’s defense but Patrick Razak final delivery was problematic.

In the 12 minutes Wa All Stars had their first chance – Richard Arthur strike took a deflection for a corner kick, the resulted kick was headed wide by Arthur.

The Wa Blues began to warm themselves into game , they passed the ball around trying to draw Hearts of Oak defenders out .

The Phobians were denied a penalty in the 27 minute after Thomas Abbey went down, but the man in the middle Cecil Fletcher wouldn’t fall for that.

A moment later the home side burst forward again but Wa All Stars backline dealt with the situation.

The Phobians kept the pressure and in the 35 minute Ivorian import Alex Kouassi broke the deadlock with a powerful strike on the edge of Wa All Stars box after Wahidu Mumuni failed to clear the ball from the danger zone.

The Phobians again turned the heat on the Wa based club as the Phobians created two decent chances but Samuel Yeboah and Patrick Razak fluffed those opportunities.

Four minutes after the break Thomas Abbey failed to double his side’s lead as he shot wide. It was end to action but the Phobians were the better side – Wa All Stars lost all the 50-50 balls in the midfield.

Any time Wa All Stars pushed forward Inusah Musah was on hand to save the Phobians. Hearts of Oak having free day in the middle they nearly doubled their lead but Samuel Yeboah’s overhead kick went wide.

A 1-2 between Yeboah and Razak opened Wa All Stars defense but the away side back line put their bodies on the line to clear the ball from the danger zone.

A persistent pressure from the hosts kept Wa All Stars at bay – Samuel Yeboah put the ball at the back of the net but was ruled as off side.

All Stars also pushed forward but Ben Mensah in post for the Phobians kept the scoreline in his side’s favour.

Out of nothing Wa All Stars grabbed the equalizer through Richard Arthhur with nine minutes left on the clock following a howler from Mensah after Kwaku Asuadzie cross pass through the fingers of the shot stopper.

Four minutes later the Phobains restored their lead after Thomas Abbey with a dive headed Kouassi ‘s cross past Rashid Seidu.

Wa All Stars the put a lot of bodies upfront but the Phobians defended their lead to win the game.
