Willett: US PGA Championship field wide open

Masters champion Danny Willett believes the US PGA Championship is wide open ahead of the first round in Baltusrol.

After three first-time major winners in 2016, Danny Willett believes the US PGA Championship is there for the taking at Baltusrol this week.

Willett claimed his maiden major at the Masters earlier this year, and his success has been followed by fellow first-time champions Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson at the U.S. Open and Open Championship respectively.

And Willett believes another unexpected result is possible in Springfield as a strong field prepare to take to the course in 2016's final major.

"I think the winners that you've got this year just go to show that you it's been so varied," he told a media conference.

"Obviously Henrik being 40 and finally capturing a major, which is surprising it's his first because of how good of a player he is. And Dustin has come so close over the last five or six years, to finally polish one off.

"[I] went into Augusta 12th in the world but kind of not really looked upon as being much of a threat.

"I think it just goes to show the strength and depth throughout golf at the moment.

"There is two, three, four, of the best players in the world that are playing some particularly good golf right now but it just goes to show on a week-to-week basis that if anyone who is really there pitches up with their A-game, they have got a good chance of winning.

"This is the last major of the year and with a lot of guys trying to play well and have that final one, the guys who haven't had one this year.

"And the guys that have one, maybe obviously trying to get two under the belt for the year."
