PGA Tour: Fowler leads by one at The Barclays

Rickie Fowler will take a one-stroke lead into the final round of The Barclays after going bogey-free on Saturday.

With a final-hole birdie and a three-under-par 68, Fowler leapfrogged Patrick Reed atop the standings in the first of four FedEx Cup play-off events.

After starting on the front nine and birdieing the fourth and seventh holes, Fowler - 28th in the cup standings before the event got underway - then had eight consecutive pars following the turn before closing out the third round with a five-foot birdie putt thanks to an exceptional approach shot, which left him nine under overall.

Reed dropped to second following his even-par 71 round at Bethpage State Park's famed Black Course.

After teeing off with a two-stroke buffer, Reed posted three birdies and as many bogeys to be within striking distance of his fellow American.

Adam Scott - the 2013 champion - is two shots off the pace courtesy of his stellar six-under-par 65.

The former world number one came out hot, eagling his opening hole before birdieing the second and the Australian went on to add another five birdies.

Scott's only blemishes came at the third and 16th holes, but it mattered little as he ended the penultimate round at seven under.

Martin Laird (69) and Emiliano Grillo (71) are tied for fourth at six under.

A shot further back is defending champion and world number one Jason Day, who produced another round of 70.

He is joined by Justin Thomas (66), Kevin Streelman (67) and Gary Woodland (68).

Dustin Johnson - second to Day in the play-offs prior to The Barclays - is four under, alongside Jamie Lovemark (69), Jason Kokrak (69), Ryan Palmer (70) Tony Finau (67) and Ryan Moore (72).

Reigning FedEx Cup champion Jordan Spieth is six shots off the lead after he struggled to an one-over-par 72, while Rory McIlroy (71) is two under.
