Swede Noren struck a course record equalling eight-under 64 at Carnoustie on Thursday to head the leaderboard, with Fisher carding a 65 at Kingsbarns.

But Noren could only manage a one-under 71 on Kingsbarns - a double bogey at the par-four fifth hurting his cause - while Fisher impressed once again on the Old Course at St Andrews, moving to 11 under through two rounds with a 68.

Fisher carded seven birdies and three bogeys to take the lead after 36 holes, with Noren's compatriot Joakim Lagergren a shot back after following up his 66 on Carnoustie with a 68 at Kingsbarns that featured an eagle at the par-five third.

Englishman Fisher made the turn in just 32 shots, but his inconsistency on the back nine prevented him from taking a more commanding lead into the weekend.

Noren now trails Fisher by two strokes, one clear of Jbe Kruger in fourth at eight under. Tyrrell Hatton is seven under, with Thomas Pieters - part of Europe's unsuccessful Ryder Cup team - among six players at five under.

Fisher, who moves on to Carnoustie for round three, said: "Not dropping a shot at Kingsbarns [on Thursday] was a real achievement, seven under was a great start. The course was kind out there but you still had to hit good shots.

"There's no getaway out of Carnoustie. At least with Kingsbarns and St Andrews, you can kind of get away with it a little bit whereas Carnoustie, you have to be really on your game.

"If I can play how I've played the first two days, I feel like I've got a good chance of going out and shooting a good score."
