Ryan Moore has been selected as the final member of the United States Ryder Cup team by captain Davis Love III after battled Rory McIlroy in a captivating play-off at the Tour Championship.

Moore, who won the John Deere Classic earlier this season, has been in great form while compiling four top-10 finishes in his last six starts. This will be the 33-year-old's first Ryder Cup, but he had a glimmering amateur record in match-play.

The news did not shock many after watching Moore give McIlroy all he could handle on Sunday at East Lake in four additional holes, but the pick means Bubba Watson missed the cut.

Despite entering the week as the world number seven, Watson has struggled since the spring and some have called into question his ability to play as part of a team.

Justin Thomas' name was also thrown into the ring because of his length off the tee, easy-going nature and ability to make birdies in bunches. But ultimately, Love went with the more subdued and safe choice in Moore.

Moore joins Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Brandt Snedeker, Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson, Zach Johnson, Rickie Fowler, J.B. Holmes, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth and Jimmy Walker on the U.S. squad. The competition begins Friday at Hazeltine National in Minnesota.
