Players who have made Ghana proud in the La Liga

Below is Pulse Sports’ selection of Ghanaians who have distinguished themselves in Spain over the years.

Yaw Acheampong

The former Black Stars midfielder played for Real Sociedad in the La Liga for two seasons - 1995-96 and 1996-997. During those two seasons, he helped Sociedad finish 7 and 8 on the league log.

Acheampong played for Ghana at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, where the country won bronze, and was also selected for the 1994 and 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Derrick Boateng

He plied his trade in the Spanish La Liga with Getafe and commanded a regular place in the team for two successive seasons from 2009 to 2011. Derrick Boateng also had a one-year stint with Rayo Vellacano in the 2014-15 league season.

He is the most travelled Ghanaian in the La Liga, having played for more La Liga sides than any of his compatriots.

Mubarak Wakaso

He began his La Liga career with Elche, before he joined Villarreal. He excelled with Espanyol too, before he left for the Russian league. The Black Stars’ combative midfielder made his La Liga return to Las Palmas before leaving again for Panathinaikos in the Greek league.

However, he made an inevitable return to Spain when he joined his current side Granada on loan. He is at the moment one of the most trusted players of his coach at the club.

Thomas Partey

Although he hasn’t been able to break into the starting XI of one of the most well-rehearsed sides in world football at the moment, he makes a mark whenever he comes on or gets the opportunity to start.

He was part of the Atletico Madrid team that finished third in the La Liga last season and reached the final of the UEFA Champions League.

Kevin-Prince Boateng

Without doubt, Boateng – playing for Las Palmas -  is the man who has made Ghana the proudest in the Spanish topflight.

The flamboyant, controversial attacker, in less than a year, has emerged as a cult hero at the Canaries, having scored nine league goals - which is his most prolific season in his career.

KP Boateng’s splendid run of form has attracted interest La Liga’s top brass, who have made him a major transfer target in the upcoming summer.
