GPL will have a sponsor next season - GFA Veep

The Ghana Football Association is confident the Ghana Premier League will have headline sponsors next season.

This year's league is sponsor-less following First Capital Plus Bank, now Capital Bank’s decision to end their sponsorship responsibilities with the football governing body last year.

The FA have been on the search for replacement for Capital Bank, but according to the FA vice president, George Afriyie, they've been unable to officially engage a corporate body as headline sponsor due to the number matches already played.

“It’s very unfortunate that there is no headline sponsor for the league this season after First Capital Plus Bank [now Capital Bank] decided to stay away," Afriyie said in an interview with Metro FM.

"Let me add that corporate bodies came on board to sponsor the league and we started negotiations but some of them were unwilling to come in this season because the league has already started.

"We tried convincing them to come on board for the remainder of the season but it’s just unfortunate it did not work. We have tried our best," he revealed.

He added that:

"Next season, we have agreed about 80% in principle with a corporate body to come on board as headline sponsor, thus, we are certain that the next season will have a title sponsor.

"For now, we have to be content with the sponsorship deal from Supersport, but next season, the league will not be sponsor-less," he stated.
