Borussia Monchengladbach believe the postponed Champions League match at Manchester City will be rearranged for Wednesday, with the Bundesliga club pushing for an afternoon kick-off.

The Group C match in Manchester was hit by a sustained torrential downpour in the build-up to a scheduled 7.45pm kick-off and there was standing water on the Etihad Stadium playing surface with the match officials undertook a pitch inspection.

However, health and safety issues around the ground caused by the adverse weather were ultimately behind the decision to call the game off, made by City's safety inspection group in conjunction with UEFA officials and the two clubs.

Monchengladbach are due to play Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Saturday and club spokesman Markus Aretz told reporters they are keen for a quick resolution.

"The decision about the kick-off time tomorrow will be given today but after nine o'clock," he said.

Asked whether a Wednesday kick-off was on the cards, he added: "That's what we're trying to do. We want afternoon – we want to go home tomorrow!"

Both clubs are set to meet with UEFA at 9.30pm to settle on the rescheduling, while Monchengladbach midfielder Oscar Wendt expressed sympathy with the 1,500 travelling supporters who are unlikely to be anything other than inconvenienced.

"We are disappointed for the fans because 90 per cent of them will probably not be able to watch the rearranged game," he said.

"But if the decision had to be taken for safety reasons then we understand it and respect it."
