The 31-year-old was the first-choice penalty taker for the Black Stars, but after missing two crucial penalty kicks, he suffered intense criticisms from Ghanaians, so he decided to stay away from penalties for the national team upon his late mother’s advice he claims.
Gyan since wasting the spot kick against Zambia in the semi-finals of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations has been sticking to his earlier decision regarding penalty kicks for the Black Stars and reiterated it on a popular radio show, the drive time on Joy FM barely two weeks ago.
However, Asamoah Gyan surprising stepped forward to take the spot kick for the Back Stars at a time they were trailing the U.S 0-1 on Saturday and surprisingly missed.
Gyan would later in the game score the consolation goal for the Black Stars via a well take free kick, but it wasn’t enough to enable Ghana fight from two goals down.
