The Ghana National Petroleum Authority (GNPC) is set to halt its sponsorship of the Black Stars, following an order from Parliament.

GNPC agreed a deal with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in 2013 to become the headline sponsors the Black Stars for five years.

Currently in the fourth year of the sponsorship agreement, the deal is set to be brought to a halt after Parliament deemed it as “a non-core duty” of GNPC.

The Corporation backs the Black Stars with an amount of $3 million every year, and also provides financial support for state companies like the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) and the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).

However, Thursday’s sitting of Parliament saw the House order GNPC focus on its core duties, which excludes sponsoring of above bodies,  following a report by Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC).

“The Committee holds the view that GNPC should stick to its core mandate. It, therefore, recommends that GNPC should stay away from all activities that do not come under its core function,” Chairman of the Finance Committee Dr. Mark Assibey Yeboah told Parliament.

The report of the PIAC further regarded the sponsorship of the Black Stars as “inappropriate”, while calling for its discontinuance.

This comes after earlier complains from the Majority Leader of Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, concerning difficulties being encountered by the Mines and Energy Committee to meet up with the demands of GNPC’s sponsorship of the Black Stars.
