Decathlon, a French sports equipment retail giant, opened the biggest sports shop in West Africa on Thursday at the Junction Mall at Nungua, Accra.

Saturday's attempt at the Guinness world record was part of the activities to mark the opening of the store.

The event, held at the Junction Mall, in front of the shop's premises, was attended by many footballers in and around Accra, but the exercise ended in participants failing to achieve the record.

The current world record of accurate football passes stands at 596 accurate passes and is held by members of the Qatar Petrochemical Company. Decathlon Ghana had hoped to usurp this record with target of 701 passes.

The event - headlined by Ghanaian football legend Abedi Ayew Pele, who took the first kick - was however overshadowed by a combination of poor passing, poor selection of participants and an inability of the footballers to understand the rules, eventually leading to a postponement.

It is unknown if Decathlon Ghana will organize a follow-up event to have another go at the record.
