Goalkeeper set for punishment for eating pie during game

Why is this goalkeeper facing investigation for simply enjoying his pie during a game against Arsenal?

Shaw, nicknamed 'the Roly-Poly Goalie', has admitted that he was aware that a betting company was offering 8-1 odds of him being seen eating pie on the bench.

“A few of the lads said to me earlier on: ‘What is going on with the 8-1 about eating a pie?’ I said: ‘I don’t know, I’ve eaten nothing all day, so I might give it a go later on,’” he said. “Sun Bets had us at 8-1 to eat a pie. I thought I would give them a bit of banter and let’s do it. All the subs were on and we were 2-0 down.”

The FA’s rules on betting state that "a participant shall not bet, either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on (i) the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in, a football match or competition.”

The peculiarly overweight Shaw became an overnight star after being spotted on the bench in Sutton's win against Leeds United in the third round, with many on the internet creating banter around his unusual weight and entertaining personality.

Sutton, a team that plays in the fifth tier of English football, made headlines by reaching the 5th Round of the FA Cup.

According to a report by the BBC, the side is made up of players who earn £600 a week and have other jobs as teachers, carers, personal trainers and builders.
