Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan is optimistic about the chances of the Black Stars, insisting the team has a “bright” chance of going all the way in the tournament.

The Black Stars defeated Uganda 1-0 in their opening game of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations to boost their chances of making it into the next round of the competition.

A penalty won by Gyan was expertly converted by Andre Ayew to hand Ghana the three points.

However, many are still not convinced about the performance of the team, especially after Uganda dominated the majority of the second half.

But the on-loan Al Ahli striker believes his side is on the right track after the victory over the Cranes.

He told Asempa FM: “Our chances are bright. If you look at the tournament, it’s very, very tough because there are a lot of draws. But for us [Black Stars], all we are looking for is to clear any obstacle in front of us so that we can progress in the tournament.

“If we progress, I’m sure we can meet everybody’s expectations on bringing the cup. Everything is possible in this tournament.”

Gyan was however quick to stress that expectations should be managed, adding that talk of winning the trophy are premature.

“But it is too early to start talking about winning the cup because we have a very long way to go. Thankfully, we have started on a good note and we have a win [against Uganda].

“So by God’s grace if we win more games, our confidence will also grow till the end of the competition. And if it’s possible to bring the cup, we will surely bring it by God’s grace.”

Ghana currently top group D with three points and will next play Mali, before taking on Egypt in the final group game.
