5 Ghanaian players who need a transfer

We love to see our players play. Aside seeing them put on the Black Stars shirt, fans love their participation in club football and that is why these players need a transfer

Ghanaian football fans love transfers involving Ghanaian players. The complete and utter joy of seeing players of Ghanaian descent rub shoulders with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robert Lewandowski is immeasurable.

There are times however when the joy of transfers are not entirely as expected. When the stereotypical comments of ‘I’ve always dreamed to play for this club’ are said and holding the club’s jersey for a showoff is done, it gets down to real business.

Not all flourish in that business though. Some players end up keeping the warming blankets for the bench players company. Others end up enjoying the pre-game meals for the first team without actually utilizing the energy consumed on playing first team football.

But when the pain of just watching games instead of playing gets immensely worrying and the sign of a promising career keeps vanishing into thin air, there is always a remedy: the transfer window.

The January transfer window is opened, and here are five Ghanaian players who need a transfer.

Kwadwo Asamoah came to Juventus in the 2012/2013 season, he saw and as it stands, there is nothing for the Ghanaian midfielder to conquer with the Italian Champions.

The former Udinese player who averaged a little over 30 games each in his first two seasons with Juventus had to settle for 10 games last season and has played 3 games with just 1 start so far this season.

It is worth nothing that the lack of games for Kwadwo Asamoah has mostly been as a result of him dealing with some injury problems.

But when you stay out too long at a club, tactics get changed for resources available and a fresh start will do for the versatile Black Stars midfielder.

Bernard Mensah is a promising star and Atletico Madrid signing the 21-year-old on a six-year deal says it all.

The former Vitoria Guimaraes player was sent on loan immediately to Spanish La Liga side Gatefe CF for the 2015/2016 season for playing time which has not quite been the case.

Mensah has not started a game in the Spanish La Liga for Gatefe this season. The Ghanaian attacking midfielder has featured only four times from the bench for the first half of the league season.

Two Copa del Rey starts are just not enough for a player who could be playing week in week out at a club with similar pedigree as Gatefe.

For more playing time and a chance to prove to the world why he attracted interest from English Premier League giants Manchester United and Serie A Champions Juventus prior to his transfer to Atletico Madrid, Benard Mensah has to move in the transfer window.

Third time might be a charm for Chelsea player Christian Atsu. Admittedly, the Ghanaian winger might not be up there yet to compete with the likes of Willian, Eden Hazard and Pedro for a place in the starting line-up for Premier League Champions Chelsea.

But it stills baffles how the Best Player at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations could not play a single game in the Premier League for new boys AFC Bournemouth.  His injury troubles may have played a part but getting two games in the Capital One Cup meant there were times where the Black Stars player could have been squeezed in.

His performance during the pre-season game showed a man who was destined for a constant place in the AFC Bournemouth team. Then the injury came. But we all will never really know if he would have been a regular, will we?

After Everton, Chelsea thought a loan at Bournemouth will do more good. It didn’t. Christian Atsu needs to move for the playing time that he needs. But the difficult part now is the choice of club, not the decision to move.

For a defender who has played and impressed in two FIFA World Cup tournaments, the French Ligue 2 is certainly not a place to be content with.

Loyalty is a great trait but there are times when clubs and players can come to an amicable decision in favour of a player’s career.

The 25-year-old Ghanaian player has played just a single game for Ligue 2 side Evian Thonon Gaillard due to injury troubles. The lack of games might hinder his chances getting plenty options to choose from as his next destination.

However, Mensah has proven in the past for both club and country that when given the opportunity in a fully fit condition, he is a really good defender.

A transfer move is the only way.

For a player of Wakaso’s caliber, settling for too many bench roles for a lowly club in the Spanish La Liga is not good enough.

A loan stint at Scottish side Celtic proved ineffective as is his current loan deal with La Palmas in the Spanish La Liga.

The former Villareal and Espanyol player could still have a fulfilling career at just 25 years of age. But the stage must be set, the conditions must be favourable and Las Palmas is just not the place.

Four starts in just nine league appearances for Mubarak Wakaso is not how football dreams are realized. The Black Stars midfielder needs a transfer and quick.
