Messi, Ronaldo, M.anifest, Sarkodie and the undying love for pro bono

Football fans are blessed to have Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in this generation. So are Ghanaian music fans blessed to have Sarkodie and M.anifest. Just enjoy, no hating.

“If you can’t explain it to a six year old, you don’t understand it yourself,” one of the most famous quotes of Albert Einstein can be drawn into perspective in terms of art.

Sunday night was a busy night. Twitter was on fire. A trend emerged from Sunday night well into Monday morning. The battle on social media was an artistic war between Sarkodie and M.anifest. Well, not Sarkodie and M.anifest but fans and followers of the self-proclaimed King of Gh rap and the god MC.

The war on Twitter was somehow a replica of what football has always seen with World Player of the Year Lionel Messi and Cristaino Ronaldo.

Approximately a week prior to the twitter war between fans of Sarkodie and M.anifest, Lionel Messi had announced his retirement from international football.

The decision had come after the Barcelona star missed his penalty in the shootout in the final game of the Copa America Centenario for Argentina. Messi lost. Argentina lost their third cup final game in row and their captain thought he had had enough.

Somewhere in Europe Cristiano Ronaldo was having the stick for not showing up for his Portugal side in the Euro 2016. These accusations supposedly came from Messi fans so the thought of the World Player of the Year not having enough character to stick with Argentina in these troubled times was pure gold for Ronaldo fans.

The battle was huge and boy did we have the somehow nonsensical points as every party tried to prove their point.

Deep down, everybody knows the football world is just blessed to have both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in this generation.

On the basis of comparisons, there will always be that disparity among fans due to the different types of play Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have exhibited.

Now back to Sarkodie and M.anifest!

Ghana is blessed to have the two artistes. Fact!

Sarkodie has over the years proved that he can keep up with the game. His recognition in Ghana and outside of the country is evident of the good work he has continuously tried to push for.

M.anifest is also a talent when it comes to rap. His lyrical dexterity is one of Africa’s finest making him appeal to a wide range of fans both locally and internationally.

However, when it comes to ‘throwing shade’, you need to risk it to get the biscuit [wink wink Asem] and M.anifest wasn’t ready to risk it.

The rules don’t apply when it comes to picking beef with others in the game of rap music. M.anifest with his lyrical content will almost always be subtle with his shade throwing tracks as god MC depicted.

Sarkodie on the other hand has always gone straight to the point, needing no vigorous decipher of his lyrical content. And quite frankly, that’s what works in the ears of the listening fans.

M.anifest gave some really good punch lines in god MC. No doubt. But Sarkodie’s Kanta was readily apprehensible to the listening ears until the mention of ‘pro bono’.

Now here’s is the reason why too much deep thoughts and meanings should not be encrypted in the work of music art.

“See I’ll help you for free but 3fri nd3 k) we be working pro bono,” Sarkodie said in a verse of Kanta.

Upon first look pro bono and free? Like seriously?

But taking the meaning of pro bono as an act for the public good, the contextual use may be right after all.

Then again, come on! This is the art of music and as it had already been established, it must be appealing to the masses.

M.anifest has some good music and his target fans are well aware and accept his form of deep thoughts rap. What is unacceptable however is the connotation that if you don’t side with the god MC artiste, then you do not have the intellectual capability to decipher his lyrical content.

Music is art. Football is art.

Just as the world of football is blessed with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Ghana is blessed with Sarkodie and M.anifest among others.

The creativity in the songs causing a stir on social media is one to behold. The opinions echoing around as a result of the two songs are also one to relish for music lovers. The battle is good for Ghana music.

All in all just as the footballing prowess of Messi and Ronaldo will forever be appreciated, Sarkodie and M.anifest are all beautiful rapping artistes in their own way.

The undying love for their fans across the globe has seen Messi, Ronaldo, Sarkodie and M.anifest share their talents with the word on pro bono. Just enjoy!
