Shirt numbers, Internet grumblers and a bunch of big-money crying babies

Football players are a bunch of crying babies. From Yaya Toure's birthday drama with Manchester City to the latest episode of Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial, this is the world of modern football.

There are stories of when players used to play with blood literally oozing down their noses. The football field was a battle field. Nothing like what is seen these days. Not even close if the stories of things unseen are to be believed. Faith, right?

Things are different now, obviously. There is Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and a whole lot of an internet sensation called social media. Don’t get it wrong, for coverage of the game, social media has sparked significant improvement.

However if inside gossips are to be believed, some players with nice hairstyles like Marouane Chamakh and Paul Pogba spend more time looking for the style to rock for the next matchday than the time they actually do train for the football game. So you see? Things have changed.

If age is just a number, why can’t football shirt numbers be, well just numbers?

The latest of the shirt number episode comes all the way from Manchester, a certain Old Trafford where Jose Mourinho is the boss.

Now in case you don’t know this, Manchester United is a football club playing in the English Premier League. They have a new manager who is a former manager of another English Premier League club Chelsea FC in the name of Jose Mourinho.

Jose Mourinho after his appointment wants to reshuffle his squad ahead of the new football season. So he looked around and found a Sweden international who brands himself as ‘god’. His name is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Now Ibrahimovic’s ego is so big that he typically gets what he wants.

And he did get what he wants upon arrival at Manchester United. First, an extra time off on him reporting for pre-season training and second, at the expense of a young Manchester United player called Anthony Martial.

Anthony Martial was given the number 9 shirt when he arrived at Manchester United ahead of last season. Having played one season and was set for another, new players had to find solace in other shirt numbers available.

But no! Ibrahimovic gets what he wants so the former Paris Saint-Germain captain was given the number 9 shirt, with the club not even consulting Anthony Martial for his opinion, rumours have it.

Martial’s new number was one worn by the legendary Ryan Giggs, but no, the France international had to revolt against the England club for disrespecting him.

Guess what he did. No. He did not submit a transfer request. Silly you.

He unfollowed the club’s official pages on social media and followed back. Lol, right?

So what is it about these big-money crying babies and their shirt numbers?

Eden Hazard was an excellent player who took over the tabloids ahead of his transfer move to Chelsea. A host of clubs was interested in the player because he had performed so well for his French side Lille. The integral part of negotiations involving Hazard and clubs who wanted to sign him was that he gets to wear the number 10 shirt. Of all the developmental prospects a new star could think of, it was the shirt number.

Branding, image rights and commercial partnership are a part of the game now so it’s sometimes understandable. But in moments where the actual football play is not put first, something is definitely wrong.

Football players putting inside information on trends of social media in a bid for their loving fans to sympathize and fight for them is outrageous. Like … grow up already.

The big-money weekly wages have also constituted in the big crying babies that these international stars are now. In what world can a man who has spent over 30 years on planet earth cry over a birthday cake and threaten to quit his job if the next cake does not have a vanilla icing. Well, a bit of an overstretch, but you already guessed right who this is about.

It’s a farce how these grown men sometimes go about how they try to do things. Maybe it’s the big money they earn for what most people deem doing so little and having fun while they’re at it. Or maybe not.

In any way, this is the story of our modern footballers on how shirt numbers can cause grumbling on the internet. Gone are the days where players fought through thick and thin for the pride of the teams they represented.

These folks are just a bunch of big-money crying babies.
