Sunderland have beaten Daniel Amartey's Leicester City 2-1 at the Stadium of Light to move off the bottom of the Premier League table.

The Ghana defender lasted the full 90minutes and produced a typically energetic display during the clash but was unable to win all three points for the defending EPL champions.

He played alongside Andy King in the midfield of a 4-4-2 system Leicester coach Claudio Ranieri opted for.

The hosts took the lead on 64 minutes, Victor Anichebe’s header deflecting off Robert Huth and into the back of the net for the opener.

Sunderland were then denied what looked a certain penalty moments later. Patrick van Aanholt burst into the penalty only to be tripped by Danny Simpson but the referee waved claims away.

However, Jermain Defoe then added a second with a little over 10 minutes to go, firing home from close range after Watmore’s shot had been blocked.

Leicester grabbed one back almost immediately through Shinji Okazaki but could not find a late equaliser as the Black Cats held on.

Amartey’s Ghanaian compatriot Jeffrey Schlupp was an unused substitute.
