Michael Essien's wife buys club in Italy

Akosua Puni Essien, wife of Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has purchased an Italian club Como at an auction

Wife of former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder Michael Essien has bought an Italian third division side Calcio Como at an auction.

Akosua purchased the club for for €237,000, but it doesn't include their training grounds or the Calcio Como brand, and the team will now be known as FC Como

A club statement said Puni Essien will return to Como soon and that she is "Football Club Como is pleased to announce that the club has a new company taking charge of the affairs of the team," the club's official statement read.

"We are pleased to announce to the city of Como that Akosua Puni, Mrs. Essien, is the new owner Fc Como Srl.

"We will soon come to the city to introduce ourselves. We are honoured to be here and to join a club with over 100 years of history.

"We want to thank our curator Di Michele for the great job done. The commitments and promises are to grow first team and focus on youth development.

"We will create the conditions to bring the Como in Serie B as soon as possible and enhance our talents."

Como were relegated from Serie B last season and are currently in seventh place in Lega Pro and on course for the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Michael Essien, husband of Akosua Puni on Tuesday sealed a one year deal with Persib Bandung in the Indonesian topflight league, which is his first club after he parted ways with Panathinaikos in the Greek league
