Canelo Alvarez will fight Liam Smith for the WBO junior middleweight title in September, as he looks to win his third title in the division.

'Beefy' Smith is sure to offer a huge challenge, however, with no losses from his 24 professional fights - his record standing at 23-0-1 with 13 knockouts.

Alvarez has the one loss to his name, his record reading 47-1-1 with 33 KOs.

The heavy hitters are sure to put on a show on September 17 with both possessing huge KO potential.

"I am very pleased to announce my next fight against Liam Smith, a tremendous fighter with knockout power, and the WBO junior middleweight world title owner," said Alvarez in a statement.

"I have no doubt that this fight will be give and take, which will fill the expectations of the fans, and I will work with all the enthusiasm as I always do to get the upper hand on 17 September, during the week to the second biggest day in boxing, Mexican Independence Day."

But Smith - who has knocked out his last eight opponents - says Alvarez will have to bring his best to take his belt off him as he looks to build his reputation in the United States.

"I am delighted to get the opportunity to defend my world title against the biggest name in world boxing and to headline in Las Vegas which is a dream I have had since I started in the sport of boxing," said Smith.

"This fight allows me to make my name in the US and show just how good I am and this is the big stage that will enable me to do that."
