Rio 2016: Buatsi claims first knockout

All but one of Sunday's Olympic boxing bouts were won on points, but Joshua Buatsi recorded a knockout against Kennedy Katende.

Joshua Buatsi of Great Britain registered the first technical knockout victory in the Rio 2016 boxing tournament by outclassing Uganda's Kennedy Katende on Sunday.

Ghana-born light heavyweight Buatsi put Katende on the canvas twice before a third knockdown - in round three - brought the preliminary bout to an end.

I noticed he was already hurt from a right hand but the referee didn't step in," said Buatsi, who will face 2015 World Championship bronze medallist Elshod Rasulov in his next bout.

"So it was a case of applying the pressure while I landed another right hand.

"I didn't want to hurt him. I'm in there to win not to hurt people so I'm glad the referee stepped in and stopped it because he would have got hurt badly,"

Sunday's other contests were all won on points, with Teymur Mammadov - a bronze medallist in the heavyweight division four years ago - among the other winners in the light-heavyweight classes.
