Light flyweight Nico Miguel Hernandez set his sights on gold after securing the United States' first medal in men's boxing for eight years on day five of Rio 2016.

USA are the most successful nation in Olympic boxing, but went without a single men's medal in London.

Their next gold in the ring will be a 50th and Hernandez hopes to be the man to deliver it after a unanimous decision victory over Ecuador's Carlos Eduardo Quipo Pilataxi.

"It feels good, knowing that we didn't get a medal [at the] last Olympics," he said.

"That gave me and my team a lot of motivation. We have all been together since we were younger, on the youth and junior team. It means a lot to me that we are coming in here and getting the job done.

"I am definitely excited about getting to this level and where I am at right now, but I am not satisfied with a bronze medal.

"I came here to get gold, so that's something I continue to work towards."

Hernandez faces Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan, with top-ranked Cuban Joahnys Argilagos or Yurberjen Herney Martinez of Colombia lying in wait.
