Michael Essien pulls out of Melbourne Victory deal

Michael Essien has decided not to join Aussie club Melbourne Victory due to personal issues.

 

Melbourne Victory were all but through with the signing of Michael Essien but the 33-year-old and his representatives decided not to continue with the transfer move.

The deal was also not helped a new rule in the Australian league concerning guest marquee. The Australian FA had to reject the move for the former Chelsea player.

Explaining how the deal fell through, a club spokesman told the Herald Sun:

“As it stands, Michael Essien won’t be joining Melbourne Victory as a guest marquee in the 2016/17 season.

“The club has been in constant discussions with Michael and his representatives, but due to some personal issues, Michael has unfortunately decided not to move to Melbourne.”

Michael Essien started his career with Liberty Professionals at youth level. The player moved to Bastia before transferring to Lyon.

Chelsea signed the Ghanaian from Lyon making him a household name in football. The player played on loan for Real Madrid before making a move to AC Milan in 2014. Michael Essien joined Panathinaikos from AC Milan on a one-year deal.
