Some of Rio 2016's silver medallists gained a measure of revenge over their Olympic conquerors in the Diamond League on Thursday.

Valerie Adams and Orlando Ortega were left to wonder what might have been after finally getting the better of the Olympic gold medallists in their respective events at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne.

Adams and Ortega finished second in the women's shot put and men's 110 metre hurdles respectively in Rio, the former having topped the podium at the previous two Games.

However, New Zealand's Adams produced a final throw of 19.94m to beat Olympic champion Michelle Carter into second on Thursday, with Germany's Christina Schwanitz taking third.

"Today was a bit hot but I am happy with my results," said Adams. "The aim of the game now is to win, and especially after the Olympics my intention is to win all my remaining meets until the end of the season.

"So 19.94m and a win, I am happy with that."

Ortega, meanwhile, shaved six hundredths of a second off his Rio time to cross the line ahead of Jamaica's Omar McLeod - Dimitri Bascou finished third, as he did in Brazil.

Francine Niyonsaba (women's 800m) and Mutaz Essa Barshim (men's high jump) also climbed a step on the podium when compared to their Games performance, although the Olympic champions in their events were absent in Lausanne.

There was no such luck for pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie, who, after losing out to home favourite Thiago Braz da Silva and being subjected to jeers in Rio, was beaten by Olympic bronze medallist Sam Kendricks.

Dalilah Muhammad (women's 400m hurdles), Elaine Thompson (women's 100m) and Caterine Ibarguen (women's triple jump) all maintained their winning form, while there were also victories for Ivana Spanovic (women's long jump) and LaShawn Merritt (men's 400m) - bronze medallists last week.

Meanwhile, Churandy Martina set a new Dutch national record to take victory in the men's 200m.
