Gyan equals Samuel Eto’o record

Asamoah Gyan has joined former Cameroon skipper for scoring in six consistent Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The 31-year-old nodded home a ball from Jordan Ayew to give Ghana a 1-0 victory against Mali on Saturday to help the Black Stars book a place in the quarter finals of the AFCON with a game to spare.

The goal made Asamoah Gyan, who is Ghana’s all-time topscorer in international football emerge as Ghana’s highest scorer in the Africa Cup of Nations with eight goals and it has also enabled the former Sunderland striker equal Samuel Eto’o Fils as the second player to score in six consecutive AFCON finals.

Eto’o, the greatest scorer in the continental showpiece, with six (18) goals scored in six straight tournaments from 2000 to 2010.

Asamoah Gyan has also scored for the Black Stars in the AFCON since 2008 when he opened his goal account against Guinea in Accra.

He scored the first of his three goals in 2010 in Ghana’s 3-1 defeat to Ivory Coast and scored one goal in 2012, 2013, 2015 and has scored one in 2017.
