New faces as Black Stars kick off preparations in Accra

Some new faces were in the mix as the Black Stars began their AFCON 2017 campaign with a first training session.

 

The Black Stars of Ghana commenced preparations for the 2017 AFCON with a first training session in Accra on Wednesday.

The session was held at the football pitch of the St.Thomas Aquinas Senior High School in Labone.

Coach Avram Grant, who is yet to officially name a final squad for the tournament, took a provisional group of 22 players through some drills in the dry cold of the Harmattan.

The players who showed up were subjected to a medical test supervised by Team Doctor Baba Adams. It consisted primarily of a mandatory blood which is part of the doping protocol of CAF ahead of the official naming of AFCON squads.

The provisional group, which sported some new faces such as Ghana Premier League MVP Latif Blessing (Liberty Professionals), U-20 goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi (FC Liefering) and young striker Bernard Tekpetey (FC Schalke), were observed by a sizeable crowd of fans at the Aquinas Park.

The official naming of Ghana's AFCON 2017 squad is scheduled for Saturday December 31 at the Conference Room of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Headquarters at Ridge. It will be at 12 noon.

The squad named will travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for a 12-day pre-tournament camping program (3rd to 13th January 2017) before final departure for Gabon.

The Black Stars, four-time champions of Africa, are in Group D of the upcoming AFCON with Egypt, Uganda and Mali.

They will be based in Port Gentil.
