Egypt place Mohammed Aboutrieka on terror list

An Egyptian court has added former football star Mohamed Aboutrieka to the authorities' terror list, his lawyer said on Tuesday, based on suspicions he financed the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

In 2015, a government committee froze the assets of the former player for Cairo-based club Al-Ahly and Egypt's national team, two years after he retired.

The government accuses him of financing the Muslim Brotherhood, which was classified as a terrorist organisation at the end of 2013.

In 2012, he endorsed the successful presidential bid by Mohamed Morsi, a Brotherhood member.

Morsi went on to become Egypt's first democratically elected president, only for the army to oust him one year later and ban the Brotherhood.

The move by the 2008 BBC African Footballer of the Year alienated some of his fans.

Any person named on the country's terror list is subject to a travel ban and faces having their passport and assets frozen.

Mr Aboutrieka's lawyer, Mohamed Osman, said the move wascontrary to the law", adding that his client had "not been convicted or formally notified of any of the charges against him".

"We will appeal this decision," Mr Osman said. Mr Aboutrika has strenuously denied the allegations.

Causing a division.

Aboutrieka who was dubbed The Magician during his playing days with Al Ahly was a key figure in the golden generaltion of the Egyptian national team that won the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) for an unprecedented three consecutive times- 2006, 2008 and 2010.

Aboutrieka was revered as a cult hero, however, his decision to come publicly to support Mohamed Morsi, whose lasted for just a year as the president of Egypt has made him unpopular among a section of the people .
