Some youth in Afloa in the Ketu South district of the Volta Region have been  demonstrating against Dangote Cement Ghana Limited  for importing cement to Ketu South.

The company has also decided to cut production from 5000 to 3000 tonnes a day.

However,  Sales and Marketing Manager of Dangote Cement Ghana Limited, Joseph Kwabena Abu said

" We don't think we are operating unfairly. It is fair, because we are operating under the ETLS, that is the Ecowas Trade Liberalisation Scheme."

The sales manager added, " We pay the right duties as stipulated by ETLS, and we not withholding any tax. So I don't think its unfair."

Mr. Abu then challenged the moral grounds on which Diamond Cement is accusing his company of unfair competition.

" I don't understand why they fight. Diamond as they fighting started bringing the goods from Togo when they started in 2000. We also have the  Chinese who are also importing from China, I can provide the evidence, who are rather dumping the goods here, no one is talking about them, its only us. We are bringing the goods from our factory in Tema."

The agitated youth want government to stop Dangote Cement from importing cement into the Volta Region.

But Mr. Abu says that's not right.

"Every manufacturer in Ghana has the right to sell  in any region. Volta region is not exclusive to any company. In Tema we have other factories going everywhere in Ghana. The only thing is they have to embrace  competition, but the competition is also good for the youth in the  area. Because it makes them more valuable to other companies who can employ them and treat them better than when there's  a monopoly."
