So what's the deal:
Is Taron Egerton really singing in Rocketman?
Yes, that is actually Egerton's singing voice in Rocketman. Before filming started, Egerton told Collider that he planned on doing the singing himself.
"Im going to do it all," he said. "Im going to do it on set as well. Were going to use a variety of techniques, but I will always be singing on set. No miming. Im just not interested in doing it that way."
Egerton stuck to his guns. In a behind-the-scenes video about the filming of the movie, the actor is seen singing "Tiny Dancer." Giles Martin, Rocketman's music producer on the film, said that Elton himself was impressed by Egerton's voice.
"Elton said, 'I don't think I've ever heard anyone sing my songs better than Taron,'" Martin explained. Talk about a compliment!
It also helped that Egerton had prior experience singing on film. He played a teenage gorilla named Johnny in the animated film Sing in 2016. In a weird twist of fate, his character sang Johns "Im Still Standing" in the movie.
Egerton also told Bustle that singing was nothing new to him. "I come from Wales in the UK and we have a fairly rich heritage of singing. Choral singing is a very big thing in Wales. It was something I did a lot in school," he shared. "When I was 17 I started experimenting with singing solo, I did an amateur musical, and when I was in drama school I was encouraged to sing. I did a singing competition that went well, and I had just been sort of waiting for the opportunity for someone to pay me to sing."
Egerton also got the chance to show off his singing chops at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party in February 2019. He again sang "Tiny Dancer," but this time he was accompanied by the Rocket Man himself on piano.
