Why do you mix political issues with personal relationships?
The elections will soon be over but our relationship will hopefully last a lifetime. Why do you mix political issues with the personal relationships?
Below are tips on how to maintain a healthy relationship during this electioneering year.
Make your relationship your priority
When disagreement occurs, remind yourself that your relationship matters more than any election result or the political debate.
Continue with the relationship amicably, a pleasing tone; do not let tempers run high. Don't let your political choices have a negative impact on your relationship.
Agree to disagree
Put yourself in the other person's shoes
As a compassionate partner, you must take a moment and ask yourself why your partner is thinking or feeling that way. Try to understand them; keep in mind that opinions are based on thoughts and sometimes experiences.
This doesn't mean you should change your ideas and beliefs. It just means that you are trying to develop an understanding of why your partner holds certain thoughts.
Win or lose, do it graciously
If your presidential and parliamentary candidates win this year's election, it is important not to gloat especially in the presence of your partner who is inconsolable.
Find people who will share in your glory and feast with them. Likewise, if your party is defeated, your best not to be the 'grieving widow' and burden your partner who is happy about the results with your sadness and disappointment.
Surround yourself with people who feel the way you do so that you can comfort and support one another.
