Claims by Bawumia are fraudulent and frivolous - Asiedu Nketia

Mr Asiedu Nketia says claims made by the NPP on the voters' register lacks merit and cannot be used as grounds for a new register

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia says claims by the vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for a new voters' register are fraudulent and frivolous.

According to him, "the claims made by the NPP lacks merit and cannot be used as grounds for a new register."

Addressing the press in rebuttal to claims by the leadership of the NPP, Mr Nketia said the use of 2010 census by the NPP to justify figures in 2012 register ignores populations growth adding that "figures described by Dr Bawumia on the statistical service on the economy was cooked yet trusts their population figures."

Prior to the 2008 elections, he said all political parties agreed the 2008 register was bloated and called for a new register for 2012 elections. He stated that the NPP is calling for a retroactive legislation with their NHIS card argument is unconstitutional.

Dr Bawumia yesterday at a press conference to make a case for a new voters' register said the NPP has discovered 76,286 potential names and faces of individuals in both Ghana and Togo register.

According to him, the evidence is damning and shows that Ghana's register is bloated.

Dr. Bawumia said the uncovering of these foreign nationals in the register is just “10% of the search.”

“Our investigative team obtained the Togo voters’ register which was publicly displayed prior to the 2015 Togolese elections. Using facial biometric recognition technology, the system has found 76,286 potential matches of the same people, with the same names and faces on the Ghanaian as well as Togolese voters' registers; some 2000 of which we present in the power point presentation,” he said.

But the NDC chief scribe said "in the absence of any documentary evidence, the EC has no legal basis to delete names from the register adding, a new register is not the solution to the defects of the 2012 voters' register."
