LMVCA's threat on NHIS registrants wrong - Lawyer

Convener of the group, David Asante, had threatened that his group will ensure that those who registered with NHIS cards do not vote if the EC fails to obey the Supreme court's order.

According to Mr. Ayenini, it does not lie within the powers of the LMVCA to enforce the suit by the Supreme Court as the group is not a party to the suit.

"If the EC does not enforce the orders in the manner that they [plaintiffs in the suit] understand when they filed the entry of judgment, they will go back to the court. David and the Let My Vote Count Alliance, they are not a party to the suit, so it does not lie with them to seek to enforce. So he is wrong to suggest that they will assist the EC to implement the orders. He is wrong. He ought to be told that what he is saying most unfortunate. He should stop it," Samson Lardy Ayenini told Accra-based TV3.

The Supreme Court had ordered the EC to clean the voters' register of minors, dead persons and people who registered with National Health Insurance cards.

But the EC said it cannot delete names of those who registered with NHIS cards based on its own understanding of the ruling.

This has prompted anger from opposition groups, with former PNC youth organiser, Abu Ramadan vowing to sue the EC for contempt of court.

Abu Ramadan argues the EC's stance on the ruling will not augur well for a smooth and peaceful elections.
