Afoko halts NPP from committing further illegalities

The injunction, however, does not stop the party from holding its conference to discuss and decide on other party matters.

Paul Afoko

The beleaguered National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Paul Afoko, has moved to restrict the party from discussing matters relating to its chairmanship at the National Conference slated for Sunyani on Saturday, Decmber 19 2015.

By means of a court injunction filed in Accra on Tuesday, Mr. Afoko is seeking to bar the NPP from discussing anything that has to do with the legitimacy of his chairmanship, as the matter is before the high court for determination.

The decision to limit the injunction to any decisions relating to the party's chairmanship only, is seen as demonstrative of his concern for the party and his appreciation of the need for other party business to go on in preparation towards election 2016, even as the substantive issue for his position as national chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party is pending in the court.

Speaking to GNA, Lawyer Sam Wilson, a private legal practitioner said it was within the rights of Mr Akofo to halt the entire process. But also thought it was a smart move to opt to restrict the party from discussing matters relating to his position only because the case is before a court for adjudication.

He added that the “man (Afoko) has his party (NPP) at heart and believes he is pursuing this case to protect the constitution and soul of the party”.
