EC begs for GHC 1.2 billion for 2016 election

The Electoral Commission said it will cost the nation a whooping GHC 1.2 billion dollars to conduct the 2016 general elections.

According to the Chairperson, Mrs Charlotte Osei,  it will also cost the nation a whooping 900 million dollars to put together a totally new voters' register.

Addressing Members of Parliament on Thursday, December 17 2015, about preparation towards the elections, Mrs Charlotte Osei said the Commission was considering suggestions to use lecturers and professors in the 2016 elections to serve as returning officers, and national service personnel as electoral and polling agents.

She said the EC has proposed an increase in the number of polling stations from 26,906 to 30,000 adding that the it also intends to train 152,000 election officials for the elections.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Osei has told Parliament that the 2016 general elections will not go beyond November 30, 2016, even if there is a run-off.

This follows her outfit's move to have the date for presidential and parliamentary elections moved from the December 7 to November 7.

She said such a situation will allow for more time between elections and inauguration on 7th January, 2016.
