The Ghana Police Command has justified the use of tear gas to control the crowd of demonstrators pressing home demands for a new voters' register.
Over 300 police officers tried to restore calm at what appears to be a very chaotic scene in Accra near the premises of the Electoral Commission when the crowd of demonstrators tried to enter the premises of the EC.

Addressing the press covering the demonstration, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police, DSP Cephas Arthur said the police had to take the necessary steps to prevent the crowd from entering the EC premises as they had not agreed with the Police to do so.

"The movement of the demonstrators violated the laid-down rules, the agreement between the police and themselves. They branched before the NDC headquarters heading apparently for the E.C and the Police stopped them," he opined.
The convener of the group David Asante in media interviews promised to defy the order by the police but the 'patriotic' citizens veered off into the premises of the EC using the Kojo Thompson road was fiercely resisted by the police who has classified the EC office as a security zone.
