Daily Guide contributed to Afoko's suspension - Philip Longdon

Philip Longdon said a series of Daily Guide publications on Paul Afoko “have been helping to hammer that wedge in the party and the problem between some people.”

One of the leading private newspapers in Ghana, the Daily Guide, has been accused of deepening the rift between the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the party’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko.

A member of the NPP, Philip Longdon on Radio Gold over the weekend said ever since Mr. Afoko was elected, the newspaper which is owned by the First Vive-Chairman of the NPP, Freddie Blay has been constantly publishing image-tarnishing stories against Afoko.

All these things, he said “have been helping to hammer that wedge in the party and the problem between some people.”

Mr. Afoko has been suspended indefinitely as the Chairman of the NPP. The decision was taken by the Disciplinary Committee of the party and was upheld by the National Execution Committee (NEC) last Friday.

He has however charged the general public to disregard the party’s decision because the composition of the NEC which upheld the decision was illegal.

Since the news broke of his suspension, some persons have blamed Mr. Blay for chairing the ‘illegal NEC meeting’ as well as masterminding and witch-hunting Afoko.

According to Mr. Longdon, until Mr. Blay’s Daily Guide ceases such publications, “things will be difficult to resolve but I guess it’s all part of politics. People have various ways of digging at their political opponents, competitors or whatever but I don’t think it helps our party.”

He suggested that whatever personal grudges people are harbouring against each other within the party must be handled within the quarters of the party.

“We must do well to try and keep it within. I am not happy that there are issues that are being investigated and monies being diverted one place or the other. This doesn’t help our party because at the end of the day, it gives ammunition to our opponents to use it against us so as a party, we have to deal with these things because it is not the best. I am not happy at all,” he remarked.
