Group kicks against splitting of Volta Region

A youth group in the Volta Region, Concerned Volta Youth, are kicking against the creation of a new region out of the existing one.

According to Jean Claude Koku Amenyaglo, convener of the group, the region was too small in size and population to merit consideration for a split.

“Regional demarcations come with a lot of responsibilities: we have to consider land size, we have also to consider the population. The Volta Region’s population is not a population that requires that we split the region,” he told Accra FM.

He added: “…the only statutory funds for development are at the assembly level, so we were thinking that instead of the president dividing the region, he should rather focus on the respective MMDAs and empower them financially just as he promised the $1million per constituency for development and the One-District-One-Factory [policy]. That is what we need, not the splitting of the region.”

During the election 2016 campaign, President Nana Akufo-Addo promised the creation of a new region out of the Western Region. Since assuming office,the president has named Dan Botwe, as the Minister of Regional Reorganisation and Development to oversee the creation of new administrative regions.
