The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna has bowed out of the contest to select a parliamentary candidate for the ruling National Democratic Congress in the Damongo constituency in the Northern Region.

His decision not to contest in the parliamentary primaries according to him, was to help seek party unity and cohesion.

A Personal Assistant to the Minister, Mr. Dramani Ecomog, who confirmed this to Graphic Online said the decision by Alhaji Limuna to pull out of the contest was not as a result of any pressure.

Mr. Ecomog said the Regional Minister who took the decision not to go for the primaries has apologised to all of his followers and said he was aware his decision may be devastating for most of them but he was appealing to them to accept it in good faith.

The Personal Assistant to the Northern Regional Minister could not give details as to how he (Alhaji Limuna) arrived at that decision at the last minute when the party had opened nominations last Thursday for those who wanted to contest in the primaries to file their nominations.

He also called on his supporters and all and sundry in the constituency to rally behind the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Adam Mutawakilu popularly known as Darlus in the constituency.

Mr. Ecomog stated further that the decision of the Regional Minister was also not because he had any doubts in his mind that he would not have won the elections but for the supreme interest of the party.

He said it was also borne out of the usual possibility of disagreements and conflicts after the primaries which one has to spend all the time to mend fences instead of focussing on how to win more people into your fold.

He added that going forward friends of Alhaji Muniru would team up with friends of Darlus to work towards widening the margins for the incumbent MP, the President over and above that of the 2012 figures.

It would be recalled that a declaration of intention of contesting in the party's parliamentary primaries in Damongo by the Northern Regional Minister sometime ago resulted in a furor between the minister and the incumbent MP with the Northern Regional Chairman of the NDC, Alhaji Sofo Azorka wading into the matter.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Northern Regional Minister and incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Sagnarigu, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, has filed nominations seeking to be retained as the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency in the 2016 elections.

He picked the nomination form on Thursday, filled it and submitted it on the same day and paid the filing fee of GH¢ 10,000.00 in a banker’s draft making him the first person to complete the process at the constituency.

Alhaji Fuseini, thanked members of the party in the constituency for their continued support and encouragement, which has helped in chalking out many successes for the constituency in terms of development.

He pledged to continue to offer selfless and accessible leadership, working to address the needs of the constituents to promote the development of the constituency.

The Constituency Secretary of NDC, Mr Mohammed Abdul-Rahaman, who received the forms, emphasised the need for all aspirants to run their campaigns with civility to avoid offending one another.

The NDC, on August 27, opened nominations for members to file to contest as parliamentary and presidential primaries of the party slated for November 7.

The filing of nominations would end on September 10.
