George Boateng withdraws from contesting Prez Mahama

President Mahama's contender in the upcoming National Democratic Congress', NDC presidential primaries, George Boateng has declared his intentions to withdraw from the race. The youth leader at the Oyarifa constituency branch of the party said on Accra-based TV3 that he took the decision together with his team including lawyers.

He said although he had party executives to endorse his forms, he could not do so in the northern regions as members he counted on were not available.

“So, I have stepped down now to throw my weight behind the president and I wish him well for 2016.”

He said he would stay back for now and would only take a front role in the run-up to the 2016 elections if the president “will amend those issues that I raised”.

George Boateng has been in the news after he declared his intentions to contest President Mahama in the party’s November 7 primaries.

The aspirant has since been engaged in verbal articulations with some members of the party, especially Mr Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the party, who described him as having a mental disorder.

National executives of the party have ruled out the possibility of allowing him contest President Mahama, arguing that the forms he bought were draft copies.

Mr. Boateng's attempt to pick new forms on Tuesday however proved futile as he was prevented from presenting his nomination forms at the party headquarters.
