Ashaiman Constituency in focus

The Ashaiman constituency in the Greater Accra region is one of the key constituencies to watch in the upcoming NDC primaries to elect parliamentary candidates for the 2016 election.

The constituency which is situated in the Ashiaman Municipal Assemble was created in 1992 but experienced some changes in 2004 when it was split into two, with the Adenta constituency coming out of it.

It has been a seat the NDC has held since its creation but lost to the NPP's Emmanuel Teye in the year 2000.

The party in 2004 reclaimed the seat when incumbent Alfred Kwame Agbesi won the seat. The member of parliament in 2008 and 2012 maintained the seat and indicated during the last general election he will not seek reelection.

The legislator in a sharp U-turn early this year declared his intention to contest the seat again after his initial promise not to.

His decision caused a lot of uproar within the party in the constituency as some members are vehemently opposing the move. This has led to five people filing their nomination to contest Mr. Agbesi and unseat him as the candidate for the NDC in the 2016 elections.

Even though pundits say the incumbent MP has lost support within the constituency, Alfred Agbesi believes he will sail through despite the stiff challenge by his closest rival Henry Ernest Norgbey who is a procurement officer at NADMO and is believed to be enjoying the support of the National Chairman of the NDC Kofi Portuphy.

The two gentlemen are also having to battle Emmanuel Max Voy, Abass Osabutey, Numoo Adinotey Addison and Emmanuel Kumadey to be able get the nod of party members to represent them in one of the largest constituencies in the Greater Accra region.
