We've been charitable to Kwabena Agyepong - NPP

Martin Agyei Mensah Korsah remarked that an indefinite suspension for Mr. Agyepong is better than a 15-month suspension.

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated that the indefinite suspension handed down to its General Secretary; Kwabena Agyepong is a blessing in disguise.

The party’s Director of Elections, Martin Agyei Mensah Korsah in an interview on Radio Ghana’s Behind the News remarked that an indefinite suspension for Mr. Agyepong is better than a 15-month suspension.

He explained saying, “it is a blessing in disguise for Mr. Agyepong to be added to the indefinite category so that it makes it open to be called any day rather than the 15 months where he will be locked. So until the 15 months elapse, you have not finished serving your sentence and that could be problematic.”

So far, three national executives of the NPP have been suspended indefinetly by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

They are the National Chairman, Paul Afoko who was suspended a few weeks ago, the First National Vice Chairman, Sammy Crabbe and General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong.

The NEC took the decision on Thursday based on the recommendation of the party’s Disciplinary Committee after some party members filed petitions of misconduct against them for openly questioning the party’s decision to suspend Mr. Afoko.

Mr. Mensah Korsah insisted that it would have been unfair for Mr. Agyepong to have been given a 15-month suspension considering the fact that he fully cooperated with the party throughout the investigations.

“So I think the party has rather been much charitable, very kind in differing this punishment and that is how people must see it,” he said.

The NPP’s Director of Elections however denied media reports that the suspended General Secretary pleaded with the NEC not to suspend him.

“That is completely false. He was at the meeting and Mr. Agyepong never uttered a word; never! At a point, he had to leave before the deliberations on these ones started because it concerned him and he couldn’t have been sitting there. Mr. Kwabena Agyepong did not utter a single word at today’s NEC meeting…he did not utter a word!” he said.

He nonetheless clarified that the suspended national officers have not been barred by the party.

“They are party members. Mind you, they have not been removed from the party, they have not been sacked as officers of the party, they only have been suspended…in fact, their positions are not vacant…and that is why those who are acting are not substantive; they are acting. They are free to participate in any party activity,” he explained.
