Voter register will be cleaned during exhibition exercise - EC

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament on Wednesday, the Deputy Commissioner in-charge of Operations at the EC, Amadu Sulley said the exhibition exercise will help make the register credible.

This follows a ruling from the Supreme Court asking the EC to delete from the electoral roll persons who used the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards as a form of identification for their registration.

The EC had subsequently indicated it cannot delete names of those who registered with NHIS cards based on its own understanding of the ruling.

“It is during the exhibition that we are able to come up with a credible register or do the cleaning and there are various processes that lead to the cleaning of the voters’ register…whatever we are going to do next month, is going to be very legal and the processes will be clear. We can’t finish the exhibition before we come and say we are going to do another cleaning or we do cleaning before we get into the exhibition."Mr. Sulley added that: “The exhibition is slated for the 18th of July up till the 7th of August, and the nomination will come off in the first and second days of September. This is what we have currently and are working towards the current amendments that we have.”
