EC receives new voters register proposals today

EC chairperson Charlotte Osei said a decision on the matter will be made after a workshop with political parties and civil society groups.

Political parties have  today  September 22 to  submit their proposals on the new voters register request by the NPP.

This will be followed by an Inter Party Advisory Committee meeting on the 23rd of September to deliberate on the matter.

The NPP submitted a petition to the EC presenting evidence to back a call for a new register. In the petition the NPP said over 76,000 Togolese nationals are on Ghana's voters' register.

The National Democratic Congress NDC on the other hand followed with a press conference saying the NPP's claims of foreigner on the register are untrue.

The party's general secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia also argued that a new register will open the gate for more minors to be registered.

EC chairperson charlotte Osei addressing the press said a decision on the matter will be made after a workshop with political parties and civil society groups. She said the decision which will be taken will however not be by vote.

She said “we are assuming that the proposals that they are bringing will be very sound. So the soundness of the proposals, the value for money proposition and whether it is generally reasonable and will promote credible elections are the things we will be looking out for.”

Madam Charlotte Osei said the EC is obliged to act in the interest of Ghanaians and not in the  interest of the parties involved.

Meanwhile the Let My Vote Count Alliance is set to organize another demonstration after the first one organized last week turned bloody. The group says another protest is necessary because they were unable to present their petition during the first one.
