Top 5 reasons why NPP may lose election 2016

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is planning cautiously to win the support of Ghanaians so as to prevent entering into opposition for the third time.

No incumbent president has lost re-election in the 4th Republic.

Here are five reasons that may cause the flagbearer to lose again in the 2016 elections:

1. NPP can't fight corruption

Nana Akufo-Addo is not in good standing to lead the party into an election. One of the most talked about promises on the lips of Akufo- Addo is to make corruption a thing of the past in his government. In fact Akufo-Addo said he is too old to steal young Ghana, as if he’s not too old to rule young Ghana. The fight against corruption will yield no gain with the current way it’s being fought, with party members purposely leaking documents instead of charging the accused to court. Akufo-Addo should dwell less on fighting this so called corruption and devote time to governing his party.

2. Violence in the party

Just in opposition for eight years, we have had the news of gruesome murders within NPP. The murder of Adams Mahama, bouts of clashes between foot soldiers at the party’s headquarters…the list continues. The NPP has a lot to do in winning the trust of Ghanaians as a peaceful and just political party.

3. 2008 All-die-be-die mantra

Nana Addo indeed did not win as some believe the Supreme Court case showed. Anyhow, what may be the tie-breaker between Nana and President John Mahama in 2016? It is no news that Nana Addo lost the 2008 and 2012 general elections due to his violent proclamations on various campaign grounds. The most popular being the All-die-be-die mantra which was used against him by the NDC. If he does not reconsider these flaws, he might as well lose this year’s elections.

4. No campaign message

Because the NPP is confident that the voters will be more swayed by their own living conditions to vote against President Mahama than anything else, having exhausted its arsenal of promise-making and being left with nothing else but loud-mouthed criticisms.  there is much coming from the NPP front to make me wonder whether the Akufo-Addo camp really knows how to do things to win the hearts and heads of the electorate. However, under the Mahama administration, Ghana, in the 2014/2015 crop season was barely able to produce 740,000 metric tonnes of cocoa but how can the NPP revive the agricultural sector?

There is nothing to prove that Akufo-Addo has learnt any lesson with which to improve his politicking after losing elections 2008 and 2012. Nana Akufo Addo failed to trumpet his free Senior High School policy like he did in 2012. It is a political rhetoric, the promise made by Nana Addo in 2012. The free SHS slogan was at best political rhetoric by Nana Akufo-Addo. Nana Addo promised heaven and earth just to win political power. But free SHS is constitutional.

5. Internal tensions within the NPP

It’s no news that the NPP has always had to manage the divisiveness within the party. With the suspension of the party chairman, Paul Afoko and general secretary Kwabena Agyepong, questions remain over whether or not the party is prepared to unite the party should he be president of Ghana.
