Election 2016 Remain calm - PPP tells supporters

The EC Chair, addressing a press conference on Monday, October 10, said the Commission is unable to accept Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom’s nomination because the number of subscribers to his forms did not meet the requirements of Regulation 7 (2) (b) of CI 94.

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has urged its supporters to remain calm as the leadership of the party works assiduously to solicit answers from the Electoral Commission on reasons for disqualifying the party.

The EC Chair, addressing a press conference on Monday, October 10, said the Commission is unable to accept Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom’s nomination because the number of subscribers to his forms did not meet the requirements of Regulation 7 (2) (b) of CI 94.

She said one subscriber Richard Aseda (‘Asida’ on the Voters’ Register), with Voter ID no 7812003957) endorsed the forms in two different districts (pages 21 and 39).

The forms, therefore, the EC said, did not meet the requirements of Regulation 7 (2) (b) of CI 94.

But commenting on the matter, Brew Allotey Hammond, the party’s National Chairman said there is still hope for the party in the December polls.

He said "following receipt of the news from the media, the national committee from the previously arranged meeting sent national executives to the EC to find out the facts of the matter. However, the EC’s offices were closed by the time the officers got there at 4pm."

“As soon as the details are made available to the national committee, the party’s official position will be stated,” he said.

He argued that the party will continue to campaign as the current move by the EC does not affect the parliamentary aspirants of the party.

“The alleged inability of the EC to accept our presidential forms does not affect our parliamentary candidates,” the PPP National Chairman added.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has rejected the nominations of Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings of National Democratic Party and 11 other presidential candidates in the upcoming December polls.

The other rejected political parties are; Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), United Progressive Party (UPP), Reformed Patriotic Democrats (RPD), and the Great Consolidated People’s Party (GCPP). The rest include; United Front Party (UFP), All People’s Congress (APC), and the Independent People’s Party (IPP).

The four presidential candidates who successfully went through the process are the flagbearers of the New Patriotic Party, National Democratic Congress, Convention People’s Party (CPP) and an independent candidate, Jacob Osei Yeboah.
