NPP will reject a second day of voting - John Boadu

In 2012, there had to be a second day of voting after many could not vote because the biometric verification devices were faulty. That election which the NPP lost was disputed and led to an eight month court process in the Supreme Court in 2013.

The acting general secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party, John Boadu has sent a strong indication that the party will not permit the Electoral Commission to run a second day of voting aside December 7, 2016.

Speaking to party supporters at a mammoth rally at the Trade Fair Centre in Accra, John Boadu, said «we will not permit the EC to do a second day of voting. They have told us all their machines are working and there are back up batteries so we don't want to hear any stories about faulty things and then we have to vote on second day. We will not permit it!"

The Electoral Commission had to institute a second day of voting in this election because on Thursday December 1, many who were supposed to vote in special voting, including police commanders, simply couldn't find their names on the register or locate where they were supposed to vote.

Special Voting allows security personnel, Electoral Commission workers, journalists and others who would be working on December 7 to vote earlier. Over 100,000 electorates were expected to vote as special voters.

On the second day of voting, Sunday December 4, 2016, voter apathy has been reported nationwide.

This development has raised concerns about the preparedness of the EC for the main elections on Wednesday December 7 when 15.7 million Ghanaians will cast their ballots.
