The New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed that they will increase the service period of recruits popularly referred to as ‘other ranks’ in the Ghana Armed Forces if they are voted into power after the December polls.

The Chairman of the party’s sub-committee on Defence and Interior revealed this to journalists and said the NPP will increase their service years by five years.

“The convention of allowing our men to retire after serving 25 years particularly the other ranks, we will be reviewing it to look at the possibility of adding five more years. That means that, unless you want to retire voluntarily, you would have the opportunity to retire after 30 years in the force,” he added.

In explaining this decision, Nitiwul said civil servants are expected to retire at age 60, but most of the people in the army retire earlier than that. He said staying longer in the army will give them opportunities in the Ghana Armed Forces.

“If a civil servant is allowed to retire at 60 years, you don’t ask somebody in the army to retire at 45 years if he enters at 20 years and then he goes home and has nothing to do.”

“We believe that the men and women of the Ghana Armed Forces will not be focused more on combat any longer. They will be more focused on terrorism, cyber-crime, helping the people, engaging in things that will support the nation as well as defend the territorial integrity of this nation.”

Meanwhile President Mahama has responded to this promise saying that it is only a political promise by the NPP which will not be fulfilled. He said they are only making such a promise to get the members of the Army to vote for the NPP

“Because they want the soldiers to vote for them they say they will now increase the number of years one serves in the military from 25 years to 30 years. They launched their manifesto not too long ago and they did not say that in it. so why are they saying that now? This is just to win votes from the military. Ghanaians are discerning now this thing will not work.”
